Re:Prothane Eclipse Motor Mount Insert Kit V6 00-05 - 2008/08/25 14:13
Yes the kit has all the mounts. There is a pretty good write up from Bo on the MitsuOAFL.com forum:
Tools list: 14mm wrench and socket (deepwell preferred but not necessary) 17mm socket (kobalt deepwell from lowes (about 4")) 3/8" ratchet 1/2" Breaker Bar (makes life easier) 1/2" to 3/8" adapterand 3/8" to 1/2" adapter. Crescent wrench.
Things to remember when installing mounts, umm I just forgot. I'll get back to you on this. Ah ok, of course your going to be under the car so get the thing on good jackstands, and at this time i'm going to release me from any liability, basically if you drop the car on yourself don't come yelling at me. Chock the rear wheels or apply the e-brake as well.
Stick jack with piece of 2x4 or similar under oil pan to hold engine. Take out the 2 14mm bolts that hold the black bar from the passenger mount to the engine. Now remove the coolant washer tank by lifting straight up on it and set it to the side. Then remove the 17mm bolt that goes through the center of the motor mount, after this is done remove the two 17mm nuts and the 17mm bolt holding the mount to the engine. Now remove the mount, press out insert and install prothane mount (2 piece so it slides right in), and be sure to add a little bearing grease or similar so that they don't squeak, that is what your trying to get rid of right? Also this is the larger 2 piece mount. Reinstall mount, just don't torqe down to hard on the center bolt as you can easily strip the aluminum. You can lower the jack as well at this point but don't put it away.
Next is the front engine mount. In order to do this life is alot easier to just remove the crossmember. But first remove the center 14mm bolt and nut, The nut is "pinched" on 3 faces so it's not just a matter of cracking it loose, your going to have to work at it for a while. After that bolt is out go ahead and remove the 2 front 17mm bolts and the 2 rear 14mm bolts. When you do this pull the crossmember out from under the car and remove the 2 14mm bolts holding the mount to the member. Press out old mount and install prothane, the prothane mount has a lip so it will be a little interesting, i've found that once you get most of it through using a small screwdriver similar to the kyb flathead to work the rest out is fine as long as you take your time and dont zip through it. This mount is the one with the larger center section (bolt hole) Do not reinstall the crossmember yet.
Next is the rear transmission mount. This one is a little tricky, considering it has to be removed anyways for the trans mount take the battery tray out. If memory suits me well these are 4 12mm bolts in the tray and 2 12mm bolts in front of the tray (towards bumper) that hold dount the harness. With this out of the way, have a buddy hold a 14mm wrench onto the nut for the middle of the mount while you are under the car with a 14mm ratchet working it out. This is a tight space but isn't to big of a pain, o it's the same story for the nut in the front mount, remember, it will take a little while. Once that is removed the motor will rock forward slightly, don't get startled. Now take out the 2 14mm bolts that you will see on the bottom of the mount holding it in and the 1 14mm bolt on top of the mount. Remove mount press out insert and reinstall prothane mount. Then reinstall, in order to get the center bolt in, just use your forearm to push up on the motor and your free hand to slide the bolt in, some of them are a pain some are easy.
Now it's time for the fun one. You will need a really deep 17mm socket for this baby. My socket comes in at almost 4 inches long. It's a kobalt 17mm socket that I found at lowes for like 6 bucks, it's a good investment. Put the jack under the transmission with the 2x4 from before and remove the center bolt and nut from the mount. These are both 17mm and I have good news, they used a real nut so you just have to crack it loose, btw I just used a crescent wrench to hold the nut. Once that is done go ahead and remove the 4 17mm nuts holding the mount to the trans, some might come out as studs, if they all come out as studs that makes it quite easy to remove the mount, if they come out as nuts then it takes a little finagling (yes it's a realy word )to get it out. press out insert and reinstall prothane insert, also a 2 piece insert. Reinstall mount and reinstall crossmember and have a beer.
