blog_conceptra.png At this year's 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Mitsubishi premiers it's "Concept-RA". Essentially this sporty coupe concept touts being environmentally friendly with a new high output, clean diesel engine. Mitsubishi also hopes to appeal to enthusiast buyers as well with the S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) and Twin Clutch SST automated transmission found in the new Evolution X which was released in Japan on October 1st.

Mitsubishi's last attempt at doing an All Wheel Drive environment friendly sports coupe was inclusive in the concept of what became the 4th Generation (2006+) Eclipse. As it resulted, the 4G carried over many of the same traits found in the 3G and left us with no all wheel drive or turbo options.

My guess if this particular project doesn't fit in right with the concept, I'm willing to bet that these are images of what we can expect the 5th Generation Eclipse to be like. Better yet, if they keep the All Wheel Drive, things will definitely be looking up for the Eclipse market once again.

Here are highlights of specs that Mitsubishi has released:

Engine:

2.2L 4 cyl DOHC Turbo Diesel MIVEC engine capable of 202hp and 309ft/lbs of torque

Drivetrain:

Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC)

Active Steering

Active Damping Control to Active Center Differential

Active Yaw Control

Sport Antilock Brake System

Active Stability Control

Undoubtedly, this is something most of us have been looking forward to for years and we are eager to continue to watch any future developments of this vehicle.

Ehh... annoying how Mitsu is so good at transforming design cues into production models, yet is so keen to leave out the things that lie beneath. I sure hope whatever drivetrain specs are posted about the concept get realized in production.

And Russ... not sure if that's your own commentary about the likenesses of the 3G and 4G. I still strongly reject the idea that the 4G and 3G are alike. Not just suspension and transmission-wise are the two cars vastly different in performance (latter having the obvious upper hand), so do the engines. And it's not due to MIVEC alone. There's a LOT of power to be made with the 6G75-M, as the bolt-on folks at C4G.org have demonstrated. I guess we'll see in a few months how much more, really, can be done with it.

I just commented that the 4G still shares a lot of traits that the 3G does. Meaning, FWD, no stock performance differential etc.

Car looks great on paper. Let's see how this thing looks in person. If this is to be the "5G" than it looks like Mitsu is actually listening to its customers. Lets cross our fingers that this thing actually hits production.

Taking this RA Concept car to production would be the best thing Mitsu could do!! I would be the first in buying it!
